La Iglesia de la Compañía de Jesús, Cusco

(Photo taken July 5, 2009)

This Jesuit church boasts a tangled and fascinating history. The church itself is built on the site of the Amaru Cancha (“Palace of the Serpent”) of Huayna Capac, who ruled over the Incan Empire at its height. At that time, the city square on which it stood was known as Huacaypata, and was the site of public ceremonies to welcome the returning Incan Army. Intriguingly, “Huacaypata” is variously translated from the Quechua as “Square of Warriors” and “Square of Tears.”
